Map of Rathcroghan highlighting new introductions to site
Native wildflowers to Rathcroghan to be used in project proposal
Native hedgerows to Rathcroghan to be used in project proposal
Benefits of Hedgerows:
Providing protected routeways for animals to traverse the landscape safely
They are host to an ecosystem of more than 200 insects and animals
Their roots absorb excess moisture in the soil which relieves any current drainage issues
They provide a strong, low maintenance, affordable solution when compared to fences and limestone walls
They act as a wind barrier and shelter for animals, humans and plants

All of the buildings are designed in standard sized, easily accessed and local timber, creating a module of 4.8m x 4.8m that is adapted according to building function. Similarly, some of these pavilion-type structures are raised above the ground to minimise ground disruption and allow for animals and plants to move below. This is done using screw pile foundations. One of the outcomes of the project is that this new rural model for construction can be applied to any function, included as a housing model for the community who struggle with acquiring planning permission due to the unique archaeology below.
